Dior discontinued Rouge Trafalgar, then in 2024 put the name back on a shelf at a much higher price. Almost nobody has explained properly what actually changed, which is why the same question keeps coming up: is the Esprit de Parfum the fragrance I lost, or a different one wearing its name?
It is a different one. Here is what Dior changed and who should buy which.
What Les Esprits de Parfum actually are
The Esprit de Parfum is not a standalone flanker. It belongs to a tier Dior created inside La Collection Privée, in which existing fragrances were reworked at a higher concentration.
The important word is reworked. Francis Kurkdjian, Dior's perfume creative director, revisited each composition to bring out its most intense and radical facets. That is a creative brief, not a dilution setting. The house was not asked to make the same thing stronger, it was asked to make a more extreme version of the same idea.
This is the detail that resolves most of the confusion online. People assume a higher concentration means the same scent turned up, so when the Esprit smells different they conclude something went wrong. Nothing went wrong. It was designed to be different.
What changed in Rouge Trafalgar specifically
Two documented changes, and you can predict the result from them.
The pink pepper was intensified. In the 2020 original, pink pepper was a cutting agent. It sat alongside blackcurrant at the top and its job was to stop the cherry turning sweet. Pushing it forward changes it from a corrective into a feature, which makes the opening spicier and more assertive rather than tart and bright.
The rose was rebuilt. The original leaned on Turkish rose. The Esprit uses Turkish and Bulgarian rose essences together. Bulgarian rose is generally the deeper, jammier, more classically rosy of the two. Adding it does not just make the rose louder, it makes the fragrance rosier in character and pulls the centre of gravity down and back.
Put those together and you get something denser, spicier and more serious, where the fruit is a component rather than the headline.

Buy the Esprit de Parfum if
What kept you coming back was the base. If you loved how the rose and patchouli held the fruit down, if you wished the original had lasted longer, or if you want a current bottle with a Dior label and a warranty of availability, the Esprit is a straightforward yes. It is more of what you liked, in the direction you liked it.
Hunt down the original if
What you loved was the first ten minutes. That bright, almost bloody tartness before the fragrance settled is the thing that has been traded away, and no amount of concentration brings it back. If that opening was the reason you wore it, the Esprit will read as a good fragrance that is not your fragrance.

Dior has never explained, and houses rarely do. What is observable is the sequence: the 2020 eau de parfum left the line, and the name returned inside a new higher-concentration tier. Draw your own conclusions, but the 2020 formula has not come back.
Is it worth the price difference?
If you want that specific fragrance from that specific house, there is no alternative and the price is the price. If what you want is the character rather than the label, the gap between a Dior Esprit and a £30.99 recreation buys a lot of other things.
